Vineyards

There are a few local vineyards close to Mogliano, that you can taste and purchase wine, a few we recommend.

La Murola is a vineyard on the outskirts of Mogliano. It has been planted in the last few years. They produce lots of good quality and award winning wines. It is certainly worth a visit. You can also book a wine tasting with a selection of salamis and crostinis whilst sitting outside and admiring the stunning views.

The winery at Terre di San Ginesio has a wide variety of wines that you can taste. One of our favourites from this vineyard is a red wine called Bertonaia, it is a mix of sauvignon, Merlot and Sangovese grapes.

Among the many local produce they sell, they also sell a cooked mixture called Sapa. Sapa is made from must, boiled slowly in dedicated pots until the evaporation lowers the volume to one third of the initial. The high concentration of sugar prevents fermentation, so contains no alcohol and once packaged is used as a condiment or sauce. Its good with cheese, but also with fruit, over ice cream, with corn meal, with meat and many other foods.

The winery at Saputi is quite hidden away and you would almost mistake it for a house. We only realised it was a winery, when we saw the wine bottles lined up outside and the small Saputi sign on the side of the building.

This is another winery which sells excellent award winning wines at a reasonable price. Amongst our favourites are Monte Nereto a red wine made from Sangovese and Montepulciano grapes, another excellent wine is Abate Pallia, made with Merlot grapes.

The Maria Pia Castelli Winery produces fine wines using selected grapes and the best equipment: a perfect blend of tradition and innovation.

When Maria Pia's father, Erasmo Castelli established the winery in 1999, driven by his passion and expert skills, he intended to make only top of the range wines.

Since then, under the capable management of Maria Pia and her husband Enrico Bartoletti, the company has achieved top quality in just a few years. Both at home and abroad, the wines are acknowledged as some of the most appealing on the Piceno viticultural scenario.

"ORANO" is a pure Sangiovese, with fruit fermented on the skins for about 15-20 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in barriques, with about 12 months aging to follow.

This Sangiovese is intense ruby red colour and elevates the concept of drinkability to another plane.

Erasmo Castelli is the winery's leading wine, made only from Montepulciano grapes, harvested in crates, with each hectare on the estate yielding 3,500kg. The grapes ferment slowly in oak casks and are moved to new oak barriques for malolactic fermentation and about 24 months ageing.

Umani Ronchi has distinguished itself since the beginning as a great interpreter of two of the most typical wines of the region, Verdicchio and Rosso Conero, and has played a leading role in the experimentation and the introduction of advanced technology. In particular, during the last fifteen years we have gone through a long period of renewal in our vineyards, increasing the density of vines planted per hectare, selecting more suitable clones and rootstocks and modifying the form of training where necessary.

Between the Marche and the Abruzzi, the land in the Company's ownership planted with vines now covers an area of 200 hectares, made up as follows: 110 hectares of Verdicchio Classico, 60 hectares of Rosso Conero and 30 hectares of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo/ Colline Teramane.

Cantina Volverino is quite a new vineyard which has only been planted in the last couple of years, so the wines are quite young, but very tasty. It is located just down the road from this house.

Ask Maja (the housekeeper) for opening times.
